CHAPTER 16

When I step into the store, I realize I have no money. Back in Hawthorne, the alpha had a deal with the town, a sort of a running tab. I didn’t have to worry about stuff like money. But I can’t exactly get a new change of clothes or a hotel room with a bathtub with just smiles.

Dejected, I turn to go back out when Ezra steps inside the store behind me. His eyes meet mine. He pats his pocket, nodding his head in the direction of the clothes at the back of the store. I grin up at him. He blinks, much like Rylan did, as if stunned. He looks slightly confused by his own response, and I decide to help the poor guy out. With my signature sarcasm.

“So did you draw the short straw?” I ask, turning toward a rack of t-shirts. Ezra makes a noise much like a chuckle would sound, if he actually ever laughed, before I hear his grumpy voice.

“I volunteered.”

“Ah, I see. Did you need to make up some community hours or something?” I’m looking through clothes, but I glance up in time to see Ezra trying to suppress a smile.

“Don’t make me regret this,” he says instead.

“I’m sure you already do,” I say over my shoulder and move farther into the store.

They don’t have many options, so I’ll probably have to settle on shorts and a tank, but I’m not done looking yet. The distance away from Rylan is giving my mind some rest. The intensity that is constantly present between us can be overwhelming at times. Not that I’d admit that to anyone. In fact, I will deny it if asked.

It’s frustrating that I can’t remember what happened on my vision quest, but it’s even more frustrating when I have an alpha staring me down, waiting for answers.

The only reason he agreed we’d go see the Oracle is because he too needed to understand why I had to return. Now it feels like we’ve taken a few steps backward. Again.

Shaking my head, I try to push away the conversation that’s playing on repeat in my mind. The anger I heard in Rylan’s voice when he accused me of his father’s death. I’ve heard it before, and it hurt me just as much this time as it did all those years ago.

I made a mistake, but I know for a fact it wasn’t my fault the alpha died. But explaining that to Rylan would be like talking to a brick wall. He didn’t want to hear me then. He’s not going to hear me now.

All I can really do is keep my head down, try and remember what happened during the vision quest, and use that to help the wolves. That’s it. Everything else is irrelevant.

“You know, he changed.” Ezra’s voice breaks through my thoughts and I turn to glance at him.

“What do you mean?” I ask, when he doesn’t continue. I think he’s surprised he spoke up at all. He looks away, searching for something over my shoulder, before his deep brown eyes focus on me once more.
